Psychiatric disorders are generally characterised by cognitive deficits, particularly in memory, executive functions and attention. In most cases, psychiatrists’ prescriptions help to stabilise the patient, but often lead to the appearance of harmful side-effects. In particular, they can exacerbate the patient’s cognitive problems. Our team is currently studying how prescriptions contribute in part to the worsening of cognitive disorders in patients undergoing psychiatric treatment, identifying the physiological processes involved in this worsening and the means available to prevent it. This research, which is taking place at the Versailles Hospital Centre, could lead to possibilities for optimising prescriptions in psychiatry by monitoring, readapting or stopping certain treatments considered to be disabling for the patient’s cognition. This project will provide solid theoretical elements for the potential development of a prescribing aid.
