The BioArtLung project aims to create a portable artificial lung that can be carried in a backpack, weighing less than 2kg including batteries. The pump system has been designed to be smaller and lighter, while the first microfluidic membrane, inspired by pulmonary physiology, enables blood to be oxygenated with ambient air without the need for pressure. BioArtLung’s biomimetic artificial lung provides an oxygenation solution primarily for patients who suffer from severe respiratory diseases, such as ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) or pulmonary hypertension, while awaiting recovery or transplantation. The device can also assist patients in cardiac failure, specifically those suffering from cardiogenic shock (often associated with a heart attack) or right heart failure.
